Regenerating Nature: Integrating Biodiversity with Food Systems

Biodiversity or nature is the rich variety of all life that we call home, from forests, grasslands rivers and everything in between. All citizens of this planet depend on nature for food; however, we are losing nature at a significant rate, putting the planet and our future food systems at danger. Our current food system is the biggest contributor to environmental and biodiversity loss. The F&D supply chain has caused 80% of deforestation, 70% of all biodiversity loss on land and 50% freshwater depletion. A transformative and systemic approach is required that produces food with nature and not against it. Understanding the connectiveness between biodiversity loss, food systems and climate change is vital in securing future food production. Whilst efforts to address food systems and nature loss have historically operated in silos, the recent COP16 in Colombia was the first time that representing parties agreed to halt and reverse nature loss. There was a strong call for food systems to be integrated in more ambitious National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans. Moving forward there are several opportunities to build synergies and develop strong nature-based solutions that address both food security and biodiversity loss. Key Topics • What are the challenges to regenerating nature in food production? • What are the opportunities for net nature positive food production? • How can we measure natural capital on farms? • How can we support common biodiversity standards and standardise natural capital measurements? • How should land management practices change to reduce impacts on nature? • What are the key levers for a food system redesign that supports biodiversity? • How to responsible source ingredients that embed nature. • Opportunities across the F&D supply chain to support biodiversity regeneration.
