Multiplication is one of the first really big hurdles in Math - kids may be able to navigate their way successfully through Math up to this point, but if they don't actually have a good sense of what numbers are and how they work and where they're going ... it all starts falling apart right about now. It's not that the times tables are hard to memorize (or even need to be memorized!) but that there may be too many gaps in a child's understanding of numbers to even begin to make sense of how multiplication works. All the tricks in the world for memorizing Math facts are only masking a much larger problem - but it's really fairly simple to address if you know the key elements to focus on that will make the biggest impact. In this class for 3rd or 4th grade students (or anyone who would like help with multiplication - parents are welcome too!) we'll take a good, slow, deep dive into how some of the single-digit facts work (not just what the answers are) - and see how these strategies will help you fly through multi-digit multiplication (and even Algebra someday!). Templates, printable activities, and online manipulatives will be provided in class.
