The Three Firsts of Pvt. Leverett Holden, CT 29th Regiment, U.S. Civil War

Discover the story of one of Connecticut’s heroes! This talk will focus on research about Pvt. Leverett Holden who served in the CT 29th Connecticut Regiment Volunteer Infantry (Colored). Probably born in Vernon, CT, he worked in Hartford for a time. He went west before the Civil War to live and work in Avon when he became a freedom seeker. The presentation uses primary and secondary documents to create Holden’s life and explains the three “firsts” that make his story special. His grave in East Avon Cemetery is the 164th site on the CT Freedom Trail.
