Enforcing Drugged Driving Laws: The Science and Data

Ed Wood, President of DUID Victims Voices, leading expert in DUID laws and data, and family advocate This presentation will explain why laws for marijuana (THC) impaired driving are significantly different from alcohol and does it matter. Ed will discuss a better way states can track marijuana DUIDs and have enforceable laws to protect our families on our roads. After his retirement as CEO of a medical device firm, Ed Wood’s 33-year-old son Brian was killed at the hands of two drug-impaired drivers on marijuana, methamphetamine, and heroin. Since then, he has worked with victims, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, clinicians, drug recognition experts, law enforcement officers, toxicologists, legislators, state officials, and an international list of researchers and other specialists in his quest to increase knowledge about drugged-driving. Ed has shared what he has learned through his website, duidvictimvoices.org, and articles published in scientific journals. In 2017 he wrote a bill that passed the Colorado legislature that requires the state to annually collect and publish information on the causes and judicial consequences of DUI arrests based on laboratory data.
